Arrival Day
🚗 Chris + Alex + Catie drive (~10 hrs)✈️ Julie flies AA703 · Arrives 10:51 PM🏨 Hotel by 11:30 PM
🚗 The Great American Road Trip Three of us are driving to Niagara — Julie gets to fly. We leave Tega Cay at 9 AM and head north on I-77, picking up five "Welcome to..." signs along the way: North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and New York. That's five new pins for the 50 States Photo Map before we even cross into Canada.

The Drive Up

9:00 AM
Depart Tega Cay
Chris + Alex + Catie · I-77 N · State sign #1: Welcome to North Carolina (wait — we're already here)
~10:45 AM
⛰️ Pilot Mountain (Look Left!)
Round quartzite knob sitting on a ridge like someone dropped it from space. The real "Mount Pilot" from the Andy Griffith Show — Andy grew up 20 min away in Mount Airy, NC. State sign #2: Welcome to Virginia
~12:30 PM
🍴 Lunch — Tamarack Marketplace, Beckley WV
State artisan center right off Exit 45 on I-77. Appalachian-inspired food, 500+ West Virginia artists, live demonstrations. State sign #3: Welcome to West Virginia
~1:15 PM
🏟️ New River Gorge National Park (15 min detour)
America's newest national park (2020). Longest single-arch steel bridge in the Western Hemisphere. Fun fact: the "New" River is one of the oldest rivers in North America — predates the Appalachian Mountains. It flows north. The name is a lie.
Afternoon
I-79 N through Pennsylvania
State sign #4: Welcome to Pennsylvania · Long stretch — podcasts, playlists, naps
~5:30 PM
Cross into New York
State sign #5: Welcome to New York · I-90 W toward Buffalo

Border Crossing

🍁 Crossing Into Canada

💳Valid passports for everyone. US citizens don't need a visa but a passport is mandatory.
🚗Rainbow Bridge is closest to the Falls. Peace Bridge (via Buffalo) is less scenic but often faster.
💰Currency: Canadian dollars (CAD). Use credit card — best exchange rates, no foreign transaction fees on most travel cards.
📱Cell service: Check your plan for Canada coverage. T-Mobile includes Canada. Otherwise grab an eSIM before crossing.

Packing

👜 Must-Pack

💳Passports — #1 priority. No passport = no Canada.
💦Water-friendly shoes — you WILL get soaked.
🌞Sunscreen + sunglasses — July sun plus mist reflection.
📷Waterproof phone case — Ziplock bag works in a pinch.
🧣Layers for evening — cool and misty by the Falls even in July.

💡 Good to Know

🌟Falls illumination every night in summer. Best from Table Rock or Queen Victoria Park.
🎆Fireworks Fridays, Sundays, and holidays at 10 PM. Free from anywhere along the gorge.
🚗Parking: Niagara Parks lots ~$25 CAD/day. Hotel parking may be included.
💰American side day: Rainbow Bridge crossing ~10 min from hotel. Toll ~$4 CAD. Passports for all 4.

WEGO + NOTL Shuttle: $25 adult / $15 child for all-day shuttle if you want to leave the car behind.

💳 Bundle Pass Analysis — Canadian Side Only

💰 Niagara Falls Pass — Canadian Side Only American side is priced separately. Niagara City Cruises (boat) is NOT in any pass — add that separately. The more attractions you do, the more the pass saves.

🚩 Decision Points for Chris

✅ Decision 1

Premium Pass ($516 CAD)?

Math says yes if doing 4+ attractions. Includes parking and WEGO bus so it's genuinely all-in. Cut to Plus ($436 CAD) if you want to skip the heritage sites.

✅ Decision 2

One Boat or Two?

Niagara City Cruises (Canadian, $191.80 for 4) vs. Maid of the Mist (American). Don't need both. Canadian side recommended — better angle for Horseshoe Falls.

✅ Decision 3

Old Fort Erie Half-Day?

30 min south, dedicated half-day. History gem with Alex/Catie at 50% off ($45 total). Worth it for this family. Could pair with Fort George in NOTL for a full War of 1812 day.

✅ Decision 4

Passports Checklist

All 4 need valid passports for the border and the American side day. Julie's flying international so presumably yes. Verify all 4 before the trip.
