# Direction 10: "Scarves Up" — the woven identity
### Token system + rationale, written before code (per brief §12.3–12.4). Companion piece to Direction 9 — deliberately its opposite.

---

## The idea in one paragraph

Direction 9 ("Wayfinding," `sbc8.html`) was night, asphalt, and signage. This is its daylight twin — and a completely different bet. The single most supporters-culture-true object in existence is the **scarf**: SBC's member kit leads with one, the catalog sells three seasons of them, and "scarves up" is the terrace gesture before every kickoff. So the scarf *is* the site: a hand-knit SVG scarf raises itself as the hero, its yarn literally stitches the page together (thread connectors draw themselves between sections), fixtures are ticket stubs, club programs are embroidered patches, and the page ends with a terrace full of scarves rising for kickoff. Light, warm, family-loud — a Saturday morning in the lot instead of a night drive.

**The two-club problem gets an even softer answer than exits on a gantry: one scarf, two ends.** Charlotte blue knit on one end, Triumph gold on the other, the same yarn all the way through. Nothing about the organization splits — only the ends are dyed differently.

## Palette (light, brand-derived — and deliberately not the cream/terracotta AI cluster)

| Token | Hex | Source / role |
|---|---|---|
| `--paper` | `#F6F9FC` | Page ground — cool blue-white (Carolina morning), explicitly not warm cream |
| `--card` | `#FFFFFF` | Raised surfaces |
| `--ink` | `#0F1D2E` | Navy ink — the clubs' shared dark, used as text/graphics |
| `--slate` | `#48536D` | Muted text — **Triumph's verified slate blue**, 7.3:1 on paper |
| `--blue` | `#1A85C8` | CLTFC verified process blue — large display, fills, graphics |
| `--blue-ink` | `#146CA4` | Process blue darkened for small text/links on paper (5.3:1 AA) |
| `--gold` | `#F4C25E` | Triumph verified gold — yarn, stickers, stitching; decorative only, never small text on paper |
| `--navy` | `#14263C` | Footer / dark counterweight |

No purple, no burnt orange, no cream, no terracotta. Every hue traces to §4 of the brief.

## Typography (a second, different answer — same client lineage)

| Role | Face | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Display | **Clash Display** (sentence case, 600–700) | The premium pairing this client already shipped and liked in Tailgate HQ (brief §4.6) — now in daylight. Sentence-case display is the loudest possible contrast with sbc8's all-caps signage |
| Text / UI | **Satoshi** | The other half of the shipped pairing |
| Quote voice | **Gambetta** italic | Warm editorial serif for the SEC Quarterly quote and hospitality lines |
| Data / tickets | **Spline Sans Mono** | Kickoffs, prices, ticket stubs, timeline labels |

Nothing from the §2 fatigue list. Fontshare + Google, `font-display: swap`.

## Layout concept (one sentence)

A knit thread runs the length of the page: the hero scarf rises ("scarves up"), its yarn draws itself from section to section — ticket-stub fixtures, the two-end scarf, an hour-by-hour horizontally-scrolling Saturday in the lot, kit-first membership cards with knit headers, embroidered club patches, the origin story — until the thread ties off above a footer where a whole terrace of scarves rises for kickoff.

## Signature element

**The scarf system**: (1) the hero — a woven SVG scarf with "SOUTHBOUND & CROWN" knitted in, wool-wobble displacement filter, dangling fringe, idle sway, pointer parallax, and a scarves-up raise on load; (2) the yarn thread that draws itself between every section; (3) the closing terrace of staggered rising scarves. Bells and whistles by client request — but every one of them is the *same* metaphor, not scattered effects.

## Motion plan (maximal, coordinated, fully reduced-motion-safe)

Load: scarf raises + fringe settles. Scroll: thread connectors draw in (stroke-dashoffset), sections stitch-pop in stagger. Ambient: scarf sway, grill smoke, pong-ball arc, flag wave in the timeline vignettes — small loops, paused entirely under `prefers-reduced-motion` (real variant: everything visible, static thread shown dashed, zero movement). Interactive: pointer parallax on the hero, ticket lift, patch wobble, horizontal scroll-snap Saturday timeline with buttons + keyboard focus.

## Self-critique against §2, item by item

- **Burnt orange dominant** — absent; the only warm hue is Triumph's verified `#F4C25E`, used as yarn/stickers ✓
- **Pill badge + emoji eyebrow** — none; the hero eyebrow is a sewn woven-tag label, no emoji anywhere ✓
- **Gradient-wash hero** — flat cool paper; the hero object is a knit scarf, not a wash ✓
- **Mid-sentence color-highlighted keywords** — headlines are single-color ink, sentence case ✓
- **Full-bleed color CTA band + stat row** — the finale is an illustrated terrace moment on paper; zero stat rows, zero invented numbers ✓
- **Ghost-text watermark** — none ✓
- **Diagonal ribbon/banner** — none; angles come from physically-plausible scarf drape ✓
- **ALL-CAPS everything + uniform thick black borders** — display is sentence case; caps only on small mono labels; borders are hairline slate or stitch-dashes on artifacts ✓
- **Font fatigue four** — not used ✓
- **Three-icon feature grid** — the four club programs are embroidered patch artifacts (patches are literally an SBC product category) with real copy, not outline icons; flagged here deliberately per the brief's "unless something in this document calls for one" ✓
- **Fabricated stats/citations** — none; fixtures again labeled "sample fixtures — design preview" ✓
- **The three AI default clusters** — light here is *cool* white + grotesk display + brand blue/gold, not cream + display-serif + terracotta; not near-black + acid; not broadsheet ✓
- **Purple** — no ✓

**Generic-default test:** an unbriefed "light, fun sports community site" yields: white page, Poppins/Inter, emoji-pill hero, three icon cards, gradient CTA band. This plan shares only the white page — and spends it on a knit object system, ticket stubs, patches, a scroll-drawn thread, and a terrace finale that only makes sense for a supporters group whose kit starts with a scarf.

## Relationship to Direction 9

Same verified brand truth, opposite execution: night→day, caps signage→sentence-case knitwear, restraint→exuberance. Both live side by side (`sbc8.html` / `sbc9.html`) so the client can pick a pole or a blend.
